Special Exhibition: Buddhist Statues Brought to Kyushu
Japanese name:特集展示「九州渡来仏」
📅 Tue, Jul 7, 2026 - Sun, Aug 30, 2026
About this event
Ever since Buddhism was introduced to Japan, people have cherished and preserved richly colored, radiant Buddhist statues and paintings, offering prayers to them. This exhibition traces the history of their reception through 40 precious masterworks of Buddhist statues brought from abroad to Kyushu from ancient to early modern times, including the seated statue of Kannon Bodhisattva from Kannon-ji Temple in Tsushima City, which returned home in 2025. Highly valuable Buddhist statues will be gathered together, including the Important Cultural Property seated statue of Nyorai, regarded as the finest masterpiece of imported Buddhist statues, and a seated statue of Nyorai considered the oldest imported Buddhist statue in Japan (on public display for the first time in 30 years). In addition, related events such as international symposiums, museum talks, and Kyuhaku's special lectures will be held to deepen understanding of these imported Buddhist statues.
