Shimenuchi Dedication Sumo Tournament

About this event

This tournament originated when shrine parishioners wrestled to show off the strength of the sacred shimenawa rope and boast of their physical power after finishing making the rope used for the Jinkoshiki Taisai, the most important ritual of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. In this tournament, individual and team competitions in the youth division will be held, along with the baby ring-entering ceremony (dohyo-iri). It is a traditional local festival where visitors can enjoy both powerful sumo matches and the adorable baby dohyo-iri.
