Yamano no Gaku

About this event

'Yamano no Gaku' is a traditional event designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Fukuoka Prefecture. Said to have been introduced from the Buzen region in the 2nd year of Kangen (1244), it is a Shinto ritual praying for family safety and abundant harvests, formerly known as the 'Water God Festival' or 'Kappa Festival'. Held every year on the autumnal equinox, it begins with the Kuchibiraki-sai ceremony the day before, followed by a series of rituals on the day. Afterwards, participants dressed in traditional attire parade in procession through the town and dedicate the Gaku dance at Wakahachiman Shrine. This is a valuable opportunity to experience rare traditional performing arts, as this is the only place outside the Buzen region where this Gaku tradition has been handed down. While not overly flashy, visitors can experience a historic culture diligently preserved by the local community.
