About this event
Haruke Tenzansha Furyu is a traditional performing art known as an autumnal hallmark of Ogi City. Held annually in early October, it takes place alongside a Shinto ritual where new sacred shimenawa ropes are hung and freshly harvested rice is offered at Iwazo Tenzan Shrine. This Furyu performance is dedicated as a prayer for bountiful harvests and peace across the land, and is said to have originated over 400 years ago when the Ogi Domain prayed for victory during the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion. Dancers wrap straw goza mats around their waists, don massive and striking half-moon headpieces called "Tentsuki," and dance heroically. The sight of them beating the large taiko drums carries a powerful presence reminiscent of stalwart samurai warriors.
