About this event

This is a special exhibition dedicated to Pierre-Auguste Renoir, a leading French Impressionist painter of the 19th century. Renoir's works, filled with a bright and joyful atmosphere, have long been beloved in Japan. This exhibition introduces Renoir works brought to Japan during the Meiji and Taisho periods, as well as works by Japanese Western-style painters who were greatly influenced by him, unraveling the impact Renoir's art had on the Japanese art world. Furthermore, bringing together precious Renoir masterpieces collected by museums and corporations across Japan primarily during the Showa and Heisei eras, the exhibition traces the journey of how Renoir, once a distant foreign painter, became a familiar artist to Japanese people—"Our Renoir." Works such as "Young Girl with Flowers on Her Bodice" from the collection of the Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art will also be on display.
