About this event

Held annually in Yamato Village, Kagoshima Prefecture, the 'Jugoya Harvest Festival' is a traditional event celebrating the year's agricultural harvest and giving thanks for the good health of the villages. It is held in each of the six villages within the municipality—Tsunaku, Yamatohama, Odana, Oganeku, Toen, and Imazato—and is cherished by local residents as the largest event in the communities. The highlights of the festival are dedicatory sumo wrestling, entertainment, and the locally rooted 'Hachigatsu Dance' (August Dance). In Yamatohama in particular, traditional performing arts such as 'Bo Dance' (Stick Dance) and 'Naginata Dance' (Halberd Dance) are performed, showing heroic spectacles to visitors. This festival serves as a valuable opportunity to pass down local culture and traditions to the next generation.
