About this event

"Shimakutuba and Utagatari Yuntaku Gathering", held on Kumejima Island, is a cultural event where you can experience three things: Shimakutuba (Kumejima dialect), island songs (shimauta), and Okinawan sanshin. Beginners and visitors from outside the island are very welcome, and you can experience Kumejima's culture while having fun. On the day of the event, you can enjoy story-singing (utagatari) by Keiko Inamine, a native of Kumejima, and sanshin performance by Chie Mita, who has lived on Kumejima for 12 years. The venue is the cafe space of "Resort House Minami", a popular lodging on Kumejima. It is a gathering with a homey atmosphere where migrants and island visitors can easily join.
