About this event
The "Hirosaki Castle Chrysanthemum and Autumn Leaves Festival", held in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, is an event that adds vibrant color to autumn at the historic castle amidst the vivid autumn foliage woven by approximately 1,100 maple trees and about 2,600 cherry blossom trees. This festival originated in 1962 (Showa 37) as the "Chrysanthemum and Autumn Foliage Festival", developing from autumn foliage viewing gatherings where people enjoyed autumn leaves and brought chrysanthemums for exhibition contests. Today, with the Hirosaki Castle Botanical Garden as its main venue, flower art displays and citizen-exhibited chrysanthemum shows are held, creating a gorgeous atmosphere for autumn at the ancient castle. At night, a special autumn foliage illumination is held, allowing visitors to enjoy the magical night view of Hirosaki Park, which differs from the daytime. In addition, beautiful autumn foliage spots are scattered throughout Hirosaki Park, letting visitors feel the deepening autumn. During the festival, bamboo lantern objects, displays of yarn "pom-pom mums" crafted by local residents, and flower water basins (hanachozu) using apples will also appear, providing a variety of autumn colors. Other highlights include a chill-out area where visitors can relax around a bonfire, and animal art objects created by Tsugaru Junior High School students.
