About this event
An on-site briefing on the archaeological excavation of the Nagao-yama Tate Ruins (Nagaoka Jinya Ruins), conducted in conjunction with renovation work on the city athletic stadium at Nagao-yama, along with a lecture exploring the historical value of Nagaoka Jinya, will be held. The earthworks and other remains of the Nagaoka Jinya Ruins convey to this day the rare structure of a shogunate-domain administrative outpost (bakuryo jinya) developed on a large scale for military purposes in the late Edo period, and it is the only existing jinya structure of its kind nationwide. This jinya site is one of the few cultural properties illustrating the history of Sagae during the turbulent period from the late Edo period to the Meiji Restoration, and is also an important historical site for political history that offers insight into the Shogunate's responses. At the on-site briefing starting at 10:30 AM, attendees can view the excavation work firsthand while receiving explanations of the findings. In addition, at the lecture starting at 1:30 PM, Professor Atsuo Nishizawa of Takasaki City University of Economics, an expert in early modern Japanese history and a leading researcher on jinya, will speak about the historical significance of Nagaoka Jinya. This is a rare opportunity to learn about a valuable historical site that tells the late Edo period history of Sagae, which was directly controlled by the Edo Shogunate.
