About this event
Held annually on the third Sunday of September in Ōe Town, Yamagata Prefecture, the "Ōe Autumn Festival" is a major event held in conjunction with the Annual Grand Festival of the town's Hachiman Shrine. The sight of traditional performing arts passed down in each local district parading through the town is spectacular, with musical accompaniment floats (hayashi yatai) crafted during the Edo period and a mikoshi (portable shrine) received from Kyoto during the Meiji period adding color to the parade. The historic lion dance (shishimai) is also a must-see highlight. At the concurrently held Aterazawa Station Front Marche, an array of delicious seasonal fruits and foods will gather, and the first 500 visitors will receive local Ōe-grown Japanese plums (sumomo) as a gift. On the day of the festival, a special retro-style train will also run on the JR Aterazawa Line, further enlivening the festivities. The parade centers around the Aterazawa Station Front Plaza.
