About this event

An exhibition showcasing the world of prints by world-renowned avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama. With the full cooperation of the Matsumoto City Museum of Art, approximately 100 print works ranging from her early lithographs to her latest creations will be on display. Yayoi Kusama released her first print works in 1979; in contrast to her works themed around death and suffering after returning from the United States, these prints feature vibrant motifs rendered in rich colors. In addition to her earlier abstract expressions, everyday motifs such as pumpkins, dresses, grapes, flowers, and butterflies are composed of nets and polka dots, donning vivid colors. It is no exaggeration to say that Kusama, whose creative foundation lay in the proliferation of nets and dots, was destined to encounter the medium of printmaking as a reproducible art form. In recent years, she has produced distinctive pieces including a series based on Mount Fuji using ukiyo-e woodblock printing techniques and the large-scale monochrome silkscreen series "Love Forever." This exhibition showcases print works held by the Matsumoto City Museum of Art in Nagano Prefecture—Kusama's hometown boasting one of the world's largest Kusama collections—supplemented by works from the artist's personal collection to present the charm and trajectory of Yayoi Kusama's print art. This exhibition is a traveling edition of the special exhibition "The Print World of Yayoi Kusama" held at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art in the summer of 2022.
