About this event
The 'Children's Sekiten' held in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a valuable opportunity for elementary and junior high school students in the city to experience 'Sekiten,' a traditional event of the Ashikaga School Historic Site. Sekiten is a ceremony that enshrines Confucius, the founder of Confucianism, and his high-ranking disciples, and is a solemn ritual with the ancient meaning of 'placing offerings.' It is said to have been performed for the first time in Japan in 701 (Taiho 1), and spread nationwide during the Edo period when Confucianism flourished, but today it has become a very rare traditional event that remains in only a few places nationwide, including the Ashikaga School Historic Site. 'Children's Sekiten' aims to help children foster an affection for their hometown and learn the importance of passing down traditional culture by having them experience this traditional event. Advance registration is required to participate.
