About this event

The Shimotsuke-no-Kuni Issha Hachimangu Autumn Grand Festival is a traditional autumn festival held at Shimotsuke-no-Kuni Issha Hachimangu Shrine, enshrined in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture. Its founding dates back to Tengi 4 (1056), when Minamoto no Yoshiie invited the deity from Otokoyama Hachimangu to pray for victory in the battle against the Abe clan of Mutsu. Within the precinct, Kadota Inari Shrine, famous for breaking bad relationships, is also enshrined. The greatest highlight of the autumn festival is the dedication of kagura (sacred Shinto dance and music), designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Ashikaga City. The kagura passed down since ancient times is solemn, conveying the region's culture and history. It is held annually on the third Saturday of October, drawing many worshipers in addition to local residents. During the festival period, various other events may take place alongside the kagura, which in particular serves as an essential element symbolizing the festival's tradition and prestige.
