About this event
The Koshigaya Autumn Festival is a traditional event held around the former Nikko Dochu Koshigaya-shuku post town near the East Exit of Koshigaya Station, said to have originated in the mid-Edo period. The sight of a mikoshi (portable shrine) procession with over 300 participants and 8 impressive festival floats representing each neighborhood parading through the town is spectacular. Ahead of the festival held on Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11, this exhibition introduces the history and highlights of the festival. Originating more than 400 years ago as the annual grand festival of Hisaizu Shrine, parishioners celebrate a bountiful harvest. The spirit of the enshrined deity is welcomed into the town of former Koshigaya aboard a horen (imperial palanquin), and parishioners gather at a temporary shrine set up in the duty town to offer comfort and devotion. A total of 8 floats, one from each of the eight main towns along the former Nikko Kaido in old Koshigaya, are pulled through the streets, being held this year for the first time in 5 years. The procession and floats from each district parading down the old Nikko Kaido make for a truly breathtaking sight.
