About this event

This is a historical walking tour visiting the residences of "village officials" who managed village administration during the Edo period, the boat landings used to pay annual rice tribute, and local village guardian shrines. Unlike samurai classes such as daimyo or domain retainers, village officials were local villagers who held administrative posts. On this tour, participants visit the residences of the Ide and Nakamura families, who served as village headmen (nanushi, the village representatives who handled local administration and annual negotiations), and Tosuke Kashi, a river port from which annual tax rice was shipped to Ryogoku. In addition to "nanushi," village officials also included roles such as "elder officials" (toshiyori yakunin) in charge of general affairs and "peasant representatives" (hyakushodai); the tour also visits houses like the Hibikiya family, who may have served as elder officials. It is a walking tour of approximately 5.3 km exploring the history and highlights of Koshigaya while reflecting on the lives of people back then.
