About this event
This is a public lecture focusing on Tomitaro Makino, known as the father of Japanese plant taxonomy. Mr. Makino poured his passion into botanical research until his final years, and his "Makino's Illustrated Flora of Japan" remains widely known today. Calling himself the "Spirit of Plants and Trees," he traveled all over Japan conducting botanical surveys, which included Nobidome and Heirin-ji Temple. In this lecture, through literary materials and plant introductions showing that medicinal herbs were collected in the Nobidome area during the Edo period, specific collection activities by Mr. Makino in Nobidome and anecdotes related to Heirin-ji Temple will be presented by Junko Tanaka, a curator at the Nerima City Makino Memorial Garden and a leading Makino scholar. Held as part of the Heirin-ji Precinct Forest Series Lectures, this lecture is an opportunity to encounter precious history and nature.
