About this event
The Shizuka Gozen Graveside Memorial Service is a Buddhist memorial service held annually in front of the grave of Shizuka Gozen in Kurihashichuo, Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture. Shizuka Gozen was the common-law wife of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. According to tradition, while on her way to Oshu, she learned of Yoshitsune's death and passed away here on September 15, 1189 (Bunji 5). After being buried at Takayanagi-ji Temple in Kurihashi at the time, the temple relocated, but her grave remained at this site. The gravestone was erected in 1803 (Kyowa 3), and after the cedar tree above the grave withered, a ginkgo tree was planted. Every year on September 15, said to be the anniversary of her death, the Shizuka Gozen Historic Site Preservation Society holds a graveside memorial service to honor her memory. This memorial offers an opportunity to reflect on Shizuka Gozen's tragic life and visit a site closely tied to her history.
