About this event

The Grand Purification Ritual of Hinosawa Daijinja Shrine, also known as "Kawase Misogi" (River Purification), is a traditional Oharae purification ritual. It is solemnized every year on December 31 at Hinosawa Daijinja Shrine. In this ritual, misfortune is transferred onto human-shaped paper figures (hitogata) prepared by the shrine's chief priest, which are then gently floated down the river in a ceremony known as "Ningyo Nagashi." Through this ancient Shinto ceremony, participants can cleanse away the year's misfortunes and welcome the new year with a refreshed spirit.
