About this event
Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the founding of its shrine building, Matsudo Shrine will hold the Shinko Festival—celebrated and handed down since ancient times as the 'Grand Festival of Matsudo'—on Sunday, October 18 this year, which corresponds to the annual regular festival. Although scale reductions had been unavoidable in recent years, this year, for the first time in 11 years since Heisei 27 (2015), the procession will be held in its original traditional form. A grand mikoshi (portable shrine) procession of 400 people dressed in ancient ceremonial attire and carrying formal ceremonial regalia will make its sacred journey over approximately 5 km throughout the former Matsudo-juku post town area spanning east and west of Matsudo Station. The sight of the main shrine mikoshi departing from the shrine grounds and parading through the area is truly impressive.
