About this event
The "Dedication Sumo" held every year on August 24 at Kashima Shrine in Hishida, Shibayama Town, is a traditional event with a history of over 150 years. It is dedicated to Kashima-sama, known as the deity of good health and sound constitution, praying for sound health throughout the year. This sacred ritual expresses respect for Kashima-sama, who was fond of sumo. In recent years, with the construction of Narita Airport's third runway, the location where this ritual is performed is scheduled to be relocated, putting this precious event at risk of being lost. For this reason, attention is focused on the preservation of this dedication sumo as a community-rooted cultural heritage.
