How to Make Wishes Come True?! - Ema and Tanzaku -
Japanese name:願いをかなえるかき方⁉~絵馬と短冊~
📅 Sat, Aug 22, 2026
About this event
In an era where each elementary school student has a tablet and paperless practices are accelerating in society, opportunities to hold brushes or pens to write characters and draw pictures are decreasing. Even today, as writing and drawing have shifted from analog to digital, wishes remain one of the things where handwriting continues to be the mainstream. From characters written on Tanabata tanzaku paper strips or ema votive wooden plaques for exam success prayers, individuality and emotion are conveyed differently than from printed characters. The custom of commoners writing wishes on Tanabata tanzaku originated from temple schools (terakoya) in the Edo period. Expressing one's wishes with handwritten characters was also a venue to present the results of handwriting practice. Why not create original tanzaku and ema with characters and drawings filled with your personal thoughts while experiencing Edo-period character learning? In this event, participants will create original ema and tanzaku using handwritten characters and drawings.
