59th Mitaka Awa Odori

A prominent Awa Odori festival in Tokyo held every August along the shopping streets near the South Exit of Mitaka Station. Marking its 59th edition in 2026, this festival is cherished as a local summer tradition not only by local citizens but also by visitors from afar. Various ren (dance troupes), including city ren affiliated with the Mitaka Awa Odori Promotion Association, gather to showcase their uniquely expressive dances. Chuo-dori at the Mitaka Station South Exit (from in front of Mizuho Bank Mitaka Branch to in front of Sano Pharmacy) becomes the dance stage, where the sounds of taiko drums and kane bells echo through the night shopping street, lifting the festival mood to its peak. There is also a 'tobiiri-ren' (open-participation troupe) system, which is rare in Tokyo, allowing same-day participation. Roadside food stalls further enliven the festival. The opening ceremony will be held from 4:30 PM on the 22nd, and the awards ceremony will take place from 7:30 PM on the 23rd.
