About this event

The Shiofune Kannon Azalea Festival, which can be called synonymous with Shiofune Kannon-ji Temple, is a festival where various kinds of azaleas, starting with wild azaleas growing naturally on the mountain behind the temple grounds, can be enjoyed for about one month. Every year from early April, early-blooming Mitsuba azaleas begin to flower; from mid to late April, Kurume and Kirishima azaleas reach their peak viewing period; and from late April to early May, late-blooming Ryukyu azaleas and others can be enjoyed. During the festival period, traditional events are also held, such as the Flower Festival (Hana Matsuri, April 8), the Children's Flower Procession (Hana Ochigo Gyoretsu, fourth Sunday of April), and the Annual Grand Festival Saito Daigomaku Kaseizanmai Training (May 3). In addition, as part of the 'Azalea Performing Arts Festival', diverse performances such as Japanese drum (taiko) performances, traditional Japanese dance, Taisho harp performances, Eisa dance, and tea ceremony demonstrations unfold on the grounds, allowing visitors to enjoy music and arts alongside flower viewing. The azalea garden is surrounded by mortar-shaped slopes, and the panoramic view of blooming azaleas all around is breathtaking. A paid admission period is set according to blooming conditions, requiring an entry fee and parking fee.
