About this event

Held annually in late August at Awazu Onsen, the "Osshibe Festival" is the largest event in Awazu Onsen, also known as the "Festival of Hot Water" (Yu no Matsuri) or "Bath Festival" (Yumatsuri). This festival commemorates the founding of the hot spring and enshrines Yakushi Nyorai of Daio-ji Temple. The name of the festival originates from a dialectal corruption of the name of "O-Sue," a maidservant who once served at an inn, whose love story became the Awazu folk song "Osshibe-bushi." On the day of the festival, tourists and skilled local dancers dress in matching yukata and parade through the hot spring town dancing to the singing of "Osshibe-bushi" and the beat of taiko drums. Centered around the Awazu Onsen Exchange Plaza, the "Osshibe Dance Contest" is also held during the period, livening up the festival even further.
