Resource Utilization Event: "Botanical Dyeing"
Japanese name:資源活用イベント「草木染め」
📅 Sun, Sep 6, 2026
About this event
As a resource utilization event in Iijima Town, "Botanical Dyeing" will be held. For this resource, "Komatsunagi" (Indigofera pseudotinctoria), the host plant of the endangered Miyama Shijimi butterfly (Plebejus subsolanus), will be used. To conserve Japan's largest habitat of the Miyama Shijimi, trimming work on the Komatsunagi consumed by larvae will be carried out, and botanical dyeing will be conducted using the trimmed branches and leaves. The event plans an observation session of the Miyama Shijimi around the cultural hall, pruning of Komatsunagi and collection of dyeing materials, followed by a botanical dyeing experience inside the cultural hall. The dyed products can be taken home and finished by shade drying. This event is a valuable opportunity to experience local environmental conservation and traditional dyeing techniques.
