About this event

The Shimada Mage Matsuri is a traditional festival originating from the Shimada Mage hairstyle, which is said to have been created by Tora Gozen, a courtesan from Oiso originally born in Shimada. Originating from the Tora Gozen Thanksgiving Festival held on September 17, 1933 (Showa 8), it has been held as the 'Shimada Mage Matsuri' ever since. The festival's highlight is the 'Shimada Mage Dochu' parade, where 'Mage Musume' (young women) styled in various traditional Japanese Shimada Mage hair arrangements and matching yukata stroll while performing hand dances. In addition, a Mage Memorial Thanksgiving service is held at Udaji Temple. The 68th festival is scheduled to be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026 (Reiwa 8), with Udaji Temple, Kawagoshi Kaido Street, and Asagao-no-Matsu Park (in front of Shimada City Museum) serving as venues. On the day of the festival, live demonstrations of traditional Japanese hair styling will take place on Kawagoshi Kaido Street, where tools and techniques are among the must-see highlights. A market (marche) is also planned to be held concurrently, making it a full day to enjoy the charms of Shimada City. A free shuttle bus is also scheduled to run, providing convenient access.
