About this event

As seen in Japanese phrases such as "tamatebako" (treasure box) and "hakoiri musume" (treasured daughter, literally "daughter kept in a box"), boxes as storage containers have been deeply connected to people's lives, faith, and art from ancient times to the modern era. Beyond practicality—such as protecting, organizing, and transporting contents—boxes, with their elaborate decorations, symbolic designs, and inscriptions (hakogaki) written on both sides of their lids, have at times concealed owners' feelings and acted as a medium speaking across time. This exhibition explores their appeal by focusing on the function and beauty of boxes. Exhibits include the Hakeme Tea Bowl named "Shiranami", the Celadon Incense Burner named "Chidori", the Important Cultural Property Black Raku Tea Bowl named "Shigure", the Karamono Marutsubo Tea Caddy named "Karamarutsubo", and the Important Cultural Property "Kabuki Scene Handscroll". Opening hours are 10:00 to 17:00 (last admission at 16:30). Closed on Mondays (or the following weekday if Monday is a public holiday).
