Mikawa Isshiki Giant Lantern Festival

About this event

Boasting a history of over 450 years, this festival at Mikawa Isshiki Suwa Shrine features giant lanterns designated as Prefectural Tangible Folk Cultural Properties. Twelve giant lanterns (six pairs) measuring 6 to 10 meters in total length appear against the twilight evening sky, while illustrated scrolls depicting mythology and history create a magical world. Said to have originated from bonfires lit to appease sea demons, it is a festival combining rich history and impressive scale. The lanterns are lit only on Saturday.
