About this event

The first major retrospective exhibition of Tokusaburo Kobayashi (1884–1949), a Western-style painter active from the Taisho to the Showa era. Having studied at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, in the early stage of his painting career he forged close ties with painters of his generation such as Yorozu Tetsugoro at the Fusain Society. While working extensively in publishing and stage design for the Geijutsu-za theater troupe, he presented works depicting familiar motifs such as fish and vegetables as well as unadorned scenes of family life at the Shunyo-kai, winning love from many cultural figures. This exhibition introduces his artistic career through more than 300 works and archival materials.
