Asakura Hashigo-jishi

About this event

"Asakura Hashigo-jishi," a Shinto ritual held at Muyama Shrine, is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Aichi Prefecture. Handed down since the Keicho era (1596–1615), the performance features a two-person lion—consisting of the head (kabu) and body (usu)—performing an acrobatic dance to musical accompaniment upon an approximately 9-meter-high wooden tower representing a mountain. Atop the 31-rung ladder and tower, the two-person lion wearing a male lion mask dances to traditional festival music in a three-part structure: Dance of Fortune, Dance on the Tower, and Dance of Gratitude. Performed on the wind-swayed ladder in a joined two-person costume, the acrobatic dedication dance featuring forward rolls and bending maneuvers provides roughly 30 minutes of breathtaking suspense. On the evening of Saturday, October 3, the "Hashigo-jishi Marche" will also be held, featuring alcoholic drinks, gourmet food, a children's fair, exhibition displays related to Hashigo-jishi, and merchandise sales.
