About this event
During the main festival (Honmatsuri) of the Otsu Matsuri, 13 Hikiyama floats parade through the downtown area of Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, throughout the entire day. The gorgeous Hikiyama floats, passed down since the Edo period, showcase traditional craftsmanship built by tying ropes without using a single nail. During the procession, at spots called "Shomo" marked by sacred Gohei wands, magnificent "Karakuri" (mechanical puppet) performances are presented, and evil-dispelling chimaki are tossed. At midday, the Hikiyama floats gather along the Chuo Odori main street, creating a breathtaking sight. During Yoimiya (festival eve), the Hikiyama floats lit by countless lanterns glow elegantly, and the festival reaches its climax accompanied by musical accompaniments of flutes, drums, and gongs. It is one of Shiga Prefecture's representative festivals where you can experience the flower of Edo townspeople culture up close.
