About this event
The Manto Kuyo at Insetsu-ji Temple is a traditional Buddhist memorial service where believers honor approximately 5,000 stone Buddha statues gathered at Raigo Jodo. To memorialize the stone statues that were once burned by Oda Nobunaga and left abandoned in the fields and mountains, a light is lit on each individual statue. The mystical sight of all the stone Buddhas illuminated is known as a quintessential summer tradition. On the day, children wearing large clay bells on their waists and believers light candles on the stone Buddhas, creating a fantastic atmosphere. Widely loved by many as a summer tradition, this event also features a lantern festival (Manto-sai), ceremonies, bazaars, and attractions.
