Maibara Hikiyama Festival
Japanese name:米原曳山まつり
📅 Sat, Oct 10, 2026 - Mon, Oct 12, 2026
About this event
The Maibara Hikiyama Festival is said to have begun in the late Edo period as a ritual for the guardian Yutani Shrine, modeled after the Nagahama Hikiyama Festival. In 1770 (Meiwa 7), three Hikiyama floats were built, and records indicate that children performed Kyogen on festival days. The highlight of the festival today is the Children's Kabuki performed atop the floats by boys in grades 1 through 6 of elementary school selected from each Yama-gumi group owning a float. The glamorous appearance and outstanding performances of the children, who have undergone rigorous rehearsals, captivate many visitors. This festival is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Shiga Prefecture.
