About this event
Johannes Vermeer's masterpiece of 17th-century Dutch painting, "Girl with a Pearl Earring," comes to Japan for the first time in 14 years. This exhibition showcases 12 works from the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague, Netherlands—one of the world's premier art museums—headlined by "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and including "Diana and Her Nymphs." Made possible by the temporary closure of the Mauritshuis for renovation work, this is a special opportunity that will likely be the "Girl's" final overseas journey. In the "Vermeer ROOM," which introduces Vermeer's early and peak-period works in detail, visitors can compare and appreciate rare early works alongside his signature masterpieces. Furthermore, through a journey across 17th-century Dutch masterpieces structured around six themes—history paintings, portraits, genre paintings, church interiors, landscapes, and still lifes—visitors are invited into the world of the Mauritshuis. A massive screen measuring up to 20 meters in length provides an immersive video experience surrounded by Vermeer's masterpieces, heightening anticipation for viewing the paintings. The video brings together all of Vermeer's works at their actual scale and examines the allure of "Girl with a Pearl Earring" through enlarged projections not normally visible, delivering a powerful exhibition experience unique to digital technology.
