About this event
The first Osaka performance in about 15 years. A special performance tracing the Yoshiwara Yukaku (red-light district) during the Meiji and Taisho periods through historical records such as vintage photographs, newspapers, literature, and memoirs from that era, rather than modern fiction or imagery. Where did the women called "Oiran" come from, in what environments did they live, and what kind of lives did they lead? Usugumo-kai has collected and studied materials related to the Yoshiwara Yukaku for 25 years. In this Osaka performance, while projecting precious vintage photos and contemporary records that are difficult to see even on the internet today onto a screen, we will trace the town of Yoshiwara and the lives of the women who lived there. In addition, as content unique to the Osaka performance, the connection between Sada Abe and Tobita Shinchi will be introduced based on records from that era. Looking beyond just the famous incident, we examine through historical records where and in what era she lived prior to it. Furthermore, after the lecture, a social gathering will be held for interested participants at "Taiyoshi Hyakuban," a valuable former brothel building remaining in Tobita Yukaku. This is a special time to actually step inside a building once used as a brothel, dine in that space, and discuss history while savoring the lingering atmosphere of the lecture. Not just "learning history," but "visiting places where history remains." Returning to Osaka after 15 years, tracing the history of Yoshiwara, Tobita, and the women who lived there. Not fiction. Traced through historical facts. This lecture is recommended for those interested in the history of Yoshiwara, yukaku, and hanamachi, fans of vintage photography and modern history, and those interested in kimono.
