About this event

The Atago Festival (Atago Matsuri) is a traditional festival with over 400 years of history, held annually over two days on August 23 and 24 in the Yagi district of Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. It is believed to have originated from the Atago faith, revered during the fire-prone Edo period as a deity protecting against fire disasters. During the festival period, prefabricated "hokora" shrines are erected and "Tateyama (Tsuriyama)" dioramas are offered. Numerous night stalls line the area, bustling with visitors. In addition, bingo games and Bon Odori dances are scheduled, making it an enjoyable event for locals and children. The venue is the grounds of Kashihara Municipal Bansei Elementary School, and admission is free. Access is convenient by public transport: about a 5-minute walk from JR Unebi Station, or about a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Yamato-Yagi Station.
