📍 Shirahama, Wakayama

About this event

This is a traditional festival handed down in Yuzaki, Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture. It is said to have begun to express gratitude and remember the favor when the Lord of the Kishu Domain exempted the Yuzaki area from land tax after lead produced in Yuzaki since ancient times became widely used following the introduction of firearms. The highlight of the festival is a historical costume procession that replicates the daimyo procession that came to the Yuzaki district carrying the scroll granting land tax exemption. The sounds of flutes and drums along with mikoshi (portable shrines) enliven the festival and entertain visitors. It is held from 6:30 PM on the first day as Yoimiya (eve of the festival) and from 1:00 PM on the second day.
