Nachi no Dengaku: 50th Anniversary Special Performance of National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property Designation

A special performance celebrating the 50th anniversary of the designation of Nachi no Dengaku as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property will be held in Nachikatsuura Town, Wakayama Prefecture. The venue is the Nachikatsuura Town Sports and Cultural Center, with doors opening at 13:30 and the performance starting at 14:00. Prior to the performance, an explanatory lecture will be given by a representative from the Wakayama Prefectural Board of Education, followed by the dedication of the traditional Dengaku passed down at Kumano Nachi Taisha Grand Shrine. Unlike the annual performances dedicated during the regular festival, this is a special program exclusive to this year in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the cultural property designation. A mochimaki (rice-cake scattering) is planned after the performance, and admission is free. It is a rare opportunity to appreciate a full-version performance of this valuable performing art that well preserves the form of Dengaku dance popular in medieval Japan.
