About this event

The "2026 Innoshima Suigun Festival (Sea Festival)" is a heroic festival that conveys the history and exploits of the Murakami Suigun (Murakami Pirates) to the present day. Reflecting upon the Murakami Suigun who operated based on Innoshima from the Nanboku-cho period through the Muromachi and Sengoku periods, this festival gives thanks to ancestors and passes down the Murakami Suigun's "teachings of heaven, earth, and humankind"—who loved the island, the Seto Inland Sea, and peace—as treasures of Innoshima to the next generation with gratitude and harmony. The festival consists of two parts. In the "Sea Festival," the gripping "Kohaya Race" is held over an approximately 1.2 km course where teams of 16 (rowers, a helmsman, and a drummer) compete for speed using small vessels called "kohayabune" that were used by the naval forces of the era. A trial kohaya ride is also held so participants can experience the feeling of the navy warriors. As a collaboration project with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, minesweeper "Etajima" is scheduled to anchor offshore with a boat tour planned (tentative).
