About this event

Fukuoka Prefecture has been collecting wartime materials and artifacts that were scattering and fading over the years since fiscal year 1988 (Showa 63). With the aim of conveying the preciousness of peace to future generations, these valuable materials are publicly exhibited every year at the "Fukuoka Prefectural Wartime Materials Exhibition." We look forward to welcoming many visitors, especially generations who have not experienced war. Exhibited items include signs announcing air raid warnings, steel helmets pierced by bullets, Hinomaru flag good-luck messages and senninbari (thousand-stitch cloths) given to departing soldiers, air raid hoods, photo panels, military uniforms, military boots, and pocket notebooks. In the past, a major military hub centered around Tachiarai Airfield—once boasted by the Imperial Japanese Army as the largest in the Orient—existed in this region, developing while playing a historic role. However, in March 1945 (Showa 20), it suffered catastrophic damage from large-scale air raids by U.S. forces, claiming many precious lives including civilians. It was also a location that saw off numerous tokko (kamikaze) squad members departing for missions as a relay base. We hope this panel exhibition serves as an opportunity to reflect once again on war and peace.
