About this event

The Oniki Tanada Festival, held in Onikigo, Hasami Town, Higashisonogi District, Nagasaki Prefecture, is an annual event celebrating the bountiful autumn. Along the paths of Oniki's beautiful terraced rice fields, surrounded by golden rice ears and bright red cluster amaryllis flowers, more than 100 unique scarecrows are gathered. Featuring topical themes such as Olympic medalists, talked-about personalities, and trending characters, these scarecrows entertain visitors. The scarecrow exhibition runs from September 19 to October 12, and on the festival day of September 20, locally produced fresh vegetables, fruits, and processed agricultural goods like Oniki miso will be on sale. Countryside-specific activities, such as edamame harvesting experiences, will also enliven the festival. Lining the roads running through the terraced fields, the scarecrows are so uniquely crafted that it is almost hard to tell which ones are scarecrows and which are real people.
