About this event

Started in 2021 in Minamisanriku Town, which explores community development living in harmony with nature after the Great East Japan Earthquake, "Satoumi Satoyama Weeks 2026" is a tourism event based on the vision of "Updating Minamisanriku through 'Tourism' × 'Environment'" where visitors can taste, learn about, and enjoy the blessings of Minamisanriku living alongside satoumi (coastal areas) and satoyama (woodlands). Local organizations working on sustainable community development collaborate to hold appealing tours and events. Amid challenges such as falling catches of salmon and Pacific saury due to global warming casting shadows on the local economy, this event embodies the desire to re-recognize the "movement toward a circular society" that Minamisanriku Town has pursued since the disaster, and create a more attractive region. Local business operators active across forests, satoyama, and satoumi share various charms of Minamisanriku and welcome participants. A diverse lineup of programs is planned, including a golden eagle rewilding forum, a satoyama sweet potato harvest festival, a storyteller bus to keep disaster memories alive, and a hands-on program experiencing life with firewood and indigo at a traditional house of an indigo farmer.
