About this event

Held in Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture, the "Sagae Festival" is a major event filled with tradition and enthusiasm, held in conjunction with the annual grand festival of Sagae Hachimangu Shrine, which has a history of over 900 years. This year's theme is "Saisho: Carrying Tradition, Advancing to the Future". Highlights of the festival are the valiant "Sagae Hachimangu Yabusame (Ancient Style)", inheriting the tradition of Kamakura samurai, and the "44th Mikoshi Festival", boasting one of the largest scales in the Tohoku region. The Goshinko Procession, in which the mikoshi descends the mountain once a year to parade through the town, and a valiant yakko procession by the Sagae Hachimangu Yakko Preservation Society will also be held. Furthermore, what enlivens the festival is the "Garyu Taiko Street Tour", circling the city with crisp drum performances. In addition, the "Station Gourmet Alley & Open-Air Market" will be held in front of the station, bringing together delicious foods from inside and outside the city. At the "Yakitori Bar 2026", held exclusively on Saturday the 19th, famous local yakitori shops will gather and local sake of Sagae can be enjoyed. On Sunday the 20th, a comedy live show by "Tonikaku Akarui Yasumura", who is also active internationally, will take place to further excite the festival. You can experience a special week in Sagae where you can taste both history and vibrancy at once.
