About this event

A regular annual event held every year on August 24 at Shimabu-ji Temple, the first of the Chichibu 34 Kannon Sanctuary pilgrimage sites, located in Tochiya, Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture. This event is based on the practice of holding memorial services so that ancestors and all spirits of creation do not suffer from hunger. During the memorial service, an octagonal revolving scripture bookcase located in the center of the Sejiki-den hall to the right of the main hall is quietly rotated clockwise, while about 40 Buddhist monks chant sutras and circumambulate in the same direction. The memorial service is held twice, at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Through this traditional Buddhist service, local people express their gratitude and memorial reverence toward ancestors and all living things.
