About this event
Held in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture, the "32nd Hassaku Sumo Tournament" is a traditional sumo tournament organized by the Tomise Regional Hometown Council. Originating in the Edo period at Fuse Benten as an event to pray for a bountiful harvest, it is currently held on a special ring (dohyo) at Akebonoyama Agricultural Park as an individual competition for elementary school children from three schools in the Tomise area. Watching children of all genders donning mawashi belts and energetically wrestling on the simple dohyo conveys the community's vitality and the continuation of its tradition. In the past, sumo lessons were also held at elementary schools in the Tomise district in preparation for the tournament, playing an important role in the healthy development of children and local interaction.
