📅 Sat, Oct 10, 2026 - Sun, Nov 8, 2026
About this event
Lacquer culture, which has been nurtured in China since ancient times, spread to Japan and significantly influenced the development of Japan's unique lacquer art culture, including maki-e and lacquerware. Through the shared culture of lacquer, China and Japan have learned from and influenced each other, fostering their respective rich lacquer art cultures. This exhibition displays 13 contemporary lacquer paintings themed around pandas from the collection of the Shen Shao'an Lacquer Art Museum in Fujian Province, China. Depicting the adorable appearance of the giant panda, cherished as China's national treasure, through the deep colors, distinctive luster, and rich textures unique to lacquer, these works convey the beauty of contemporary Chinese lacquer art within their approachable nature. Viewing pandas as symbols of coexistence with nature, peace, and friendship, the exhibition also highlights cultural exchange between Japan and China through lacquer. Please enjoy at the venue the new charm of Chinese lacquer art born from the encounter between traditionally inherited lacquer culture and free expression by contemporary artists.
