Himonya Hachimangu Annual Grand Festival

The Himonya Hachimangu Autumn Annual Grand Festival is an autumn festival held at Himonya Hachimangu, which enshrines Hondawake no Mikoto (Emperor Ojin). Held every year on the day before and two days before Respect for the Aged Day in September, portable shrines (mikoshi) parade through the neighborhood, enveloping the area in a lively atmosphere. Many festival stalls with nostalgic Showa-era charm line the grounds, from classic festival food to magic rings, shooting galleries, ring toss, goldfish scooping, and sugar candy carving (katanuki). During the daytime, the grounds are lively with children in yukata, and the gathering of mikoshi is one of the highlights. At night, paper lanterns are lit, casting a magical atmosphere over the shrine grounds where you can enjoy food stalls with a beer in hand. The mikoshi route varies by neighborhood association. Another charm is enjoying the stalls while listening to the sounds of bell crickets in the shrine precincts. Red ink stamps (goshuin) are also available at the shrine office.
