About this event
In conjunction with "Railway Day" on October 14, Tamarokuto Science Center will host a 2-day hands-on event titled "Learn the Secrets of Trains at the Science Museum" on October 3 and 4, 2026. Through miniature train driving experiences, electricity demonstrations, and various exhibits, visitors can enjoy learning about the mechanisms of trains they use every day from a scientific perspective. Using the familiar train as an entry point for children, the event aims to foster their interest and curiosity in physical phenomena such as electricity and magnetism. In addition, the preserved "Yume-kukan" passenger car located in Kiyose Central Park will be introduced through display panels, providing an opportunity to raise interest in local railway heritage. At the venue, with the cooperation of the Tamarokuto Science Center Volunteer Association, activities such as model train driving experiences, electricity demonstrations, and motor crafting workshops will be held. Furthermore, panel exhibits on the differences between real railways and model trains, wheel shapes designed to negotiate curves, cutaway rail models, experiences running N-gauge model trains using human-powered electric generation, and a kids' corner will be provided. Corners introducing notable railways, stations, and train cars from Kodaira City, Higashimurayama City, and Kiyose City will also be featured, including a futuristic diorama display and archival materials from Kodaira City, an introduction to the "Kumegawa Train Library" from Higashimurayama City, and a panel introduction to "Yume-kukan" from Kiyose City. Consultations regarding railway-related careers and academic paths with science museum educators will also be available. In addition, a special book selection featuring railway-related books curated by libraries in the five regional cities and the museum will run from October 1 to November 8, 2026. A concurrent event titled "Let's Drive an Electric Model Train!" for elementary school students will allow them to learn how electricity works while actually operating N-gauge model trains. Participation requires only the general admission fee: 520 yen for adults and 210 yen for children (ages 4 through high school students).
