Japanese name:宝物風入(建長寺・円覚寺)
📅 Sat, Oct 31, 2026 - Mon, Nov 2, 2026
About this event
Held every autumn at Kencho-ji and Engaku-ji, the two major Zen temples in Kamakura, 'Treasures Airing' (Homotsu Kazeire) is a special opportunity to view valuable treasures handed down in the temples. In this event, Important Cultural Properties, national treasure-class Buddhist statues, letters, and paintings that are usually not on view are exhibited while being aired out for preservation. At Kencho-ji, National Treasures such as the 'Portrait of Rankei Doryu' and 'Rules of Dharma Words,' as well as the Important Cultural Property 'Seated Statue of Hojo Tokiyori,' are scheduled to be displayed. Meanwhile, at Engaku-ji, the National Treasure 'Shariden' (Relic Hall) will be specially opened to the public, allowing visitors to see the 'Buddha's Relics' housed inside up close. In addition, many historically valuable ancient documents, including letters written by Mugaku Sogen and letters by Hojo Tokimune, will be exhibited. Including paintings, sculptures, and handicrafts, it will be a precious experience to encounter the rich cultural heritage preserved by both temples. At Engaku-ji, experiential programs such as Zazen (seated meditation) sessions may also be held alongside treasure viewing.
