Japanese name:絵筆塚祭(荏柄天神社)
📅 Sun, Oct 4, 2026
About this event
This is a special ritual held in front of the 'Kappa Fudezuka' and the 'Efudezuka' (picture brush mound) built by manga artists on the grounds of Egara Tenjin Shrine, performing a memorial burning service for used brushes. The 'Kappa Fudezuka', associated with manga artist Kon Shimizu who continued to draw kappa (mythical water creatures), and the 'Efudezuka', erected by manga artists including Ryuichi Yokoyama who carried on his legacy, commemorate the history of the Kamakura manga artist community. This festival is held to express gratitude for worn-out brushes and to pray for new creative endeavors. It is usually held on the first or second Sunday of October, and the memorial burning service in front of the brush monument is the biggest highlight of this festival. It is a cultural event where you can feel the passion and history of manga artists embedded in the brush monument.
